There are several different designs and options in both cable ties as well as cable tie mounts used for indoor and outdoor applications. Typically, metal cable tie mounts will include the use of heavy duty plastic or durable stainless steel cable ties.
The use of the stainless steel or plastic heavy-duty cable ties, including multicolored ties for easy identification of specific cable bundles, will typically be recommended for outdoor use, particularly if there is a concern with moisture. The high corrosion resistance of stainless makes these cable ties a good option, but the longer life cycle compared to plastic is also a factor to consider.
Along with the cable ties, it will be important to choose the correct metal cable tie mounts. As metal cables will be heavier than lighter types of cables, it will be essential to choose a mount that is going to provide the ability to support the weight of the single metal cable or the metal cable bundle.
Fastening and Security
It will be essential to look carefully at the design of the mount and how they attach to the surface. Most often these mounts designed for the heavier cables will attach through the use of one or more fasteners that go through the mount and into the wall, beam, floor or ceiling.
With light cables and the use of the light plastic cable dies, adhesive mounts can be used, particularly on surfaces that are smooth and ideal for use with the adhesive. While faster to apply, they are also more likely to pull off, which can be a consideration both during installation as well as in general use.
Saddle Type Mounts
For larger cable bundles or cable that is large in diameter, a saddle type of metal cable tie mounts is highly recommended in most applications. The mount features a U-shape in the base the cradles the cable and provides support for holding the cable into the mount. The cable tie is used around the bottom of the “saddle” and through the sides, creating a secure hold for the cable that is not going to change due to vibration, the weight of the cable or other factors once it has been installed.
