When it comes to buying equipment, particularly something as important as a hydraulic trailer for a luxury yacht, sailboat or any type of power boat, you definitely want to make sure you are buying a well-designed trailer.
Sometimes people feel the only way to get a quality trailer is to buy new. While a new hydraulic boat trailer is always a good option when it is purchased from a reputable manufacturer and dealer, there are also some great options in used hydraulic boat trailer models as well.
One of the reasons buying a good quality used hydraulic boat trailer is a safe investment is because of the ease of determining if the trailer is good quality in craftsmanship and if it has been well maintained. Even without knowing a lot about trailer design and fabrication or hydraulic systems you can complete some quick checks to determine if it is a quality trailer or one that has seen better days.
Check the Trailer
Unless you are working with a dealer you trust and a manufacturer that you know, it is never a good idea to buy a used hydraulic boat trailer without inspecting the trailer.
A few of the top marine transport companies that manufacturer boat trailers will sell used or pre-owned trailers. This is usually offered on their website and will only include their own specific trailers. As many of these trailers may be customized for particular boats or yard requirements, you may be able to find a top of the line, fully customized trailer for a fraction of the cost of a similar new model.
Check the frame for signs of damage, cracks in the weld or areas of rust. If the trailer has had any repairs, ask to see the documentation and verify with a mechanic or technician you trust that the repairs were completed and the trailer is in top condition.
Check the Hydraulics
One of the most costly repairs on any type of hydraulic boat trailer will be the hydraulic system itself. Check along the mounts and cylinders for any signs of cracks, stress fractures, leaks or damage to the hoses.
If there is a remote control feature, make sure that works as well. This can be done without the need to actually load a boat. Look for smooth extension and retraction of the cylinders and full control over the movement and speed of the arms. After using the hydraulics check again for leaks.
